SUMMARY:Can an Israel-Palestine confederation serve as a new pathway to peace? (Ron Skolnik) [**VIRTUAL PROGRAM**]
DESCRIPTION:Over the last thirty years\, the driving concept of Israel-Palestine peacemaking has been a two-state solution based on a hard territorial partition. Recently\, however\, a growing number of Israelis and Palestinians have been exploring an innovative\, EU-like confederal arrangement as a way to overcome the obstacles that have tripped up diplomacy in the past. Ron Skolnik will discuss these confederation-oriented initiatives\, including “A Land for All: Two States One Homeland” and “The Holy Land Confederation”\, comparing and contrasting them with the traditional two-state approach. \nRon Skolnik is a political consultant\, columnist\, speaker\, and Hebrew-English translator. He most recently served as the director of Americans Friends of A Land for All\, the North American ally of the Israeli-Palestinian movement\, A Land for All: Two States One Homeland\, which advocates for an Israel-Palestine confederation. He previously served as political advisor to the British Embassy in Israel\, researching and reporting on the country’s political trends\, and as executive director of Partners for Progressive Israel in the U.S. After growing up in the States\, Ron lived in Israel over 25 years\, earning his BA in history from Haifa University and MA in Diplomatic and Military History from Tel Aviv University. His political commentary has appeared in Haaretz\, the Forward\, Tikkun\, Palestine-Israel Journal\, the Times of Israel\, Al-Monitor\, and Jewish Currents\, and he has been interviewed on various news outlets\, including the BBC\, Al Jazeera TV\, and the Jewish Broadcasting Service. \nThis virtual program will last for 1.5 hours with time for both presentation and engagement. SUMMARY:Homecoming: Life after Incarceration (Jacob Mihalak\, housing rights specialist)
DESCRIPTION:The United States has 5 percent of the world’s population but 25 percent of the world’s prison population. The majority of the people in America’s jails and prisons will eventually be released\, and then they often to face a myriad of challenges. \nThis presentation offers an overview of 10-episode training series\, Homecoming: Life after Incarceration\, developed by Jacob Mihalak and his filmmaking colleague\, Josh Hayes\, for the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development. Homecoming is a multimedia project that is designed to highlight the challenges and struggles people experience as they try to re-enter society. Homecoming showcases examples of organizations and people who are leading the way in supporting the reentry population as well as listens to the often-marginalized voices of the population themselves. Homecoming has a secondary focus on the connection between HIV and incarceration and highlights the challenges and opportunities that exist in addressing the housing and health needs of people with HIV exiting jails and prisons. \nJacob Mihalak’s 40-year career has centered around planning\, funding\, implementing\, and providing technical assistance related to housing and services for people living with HIV and/or experiencing homelessness. \n
