SUMMARY:Transformative Advocacy & Awakening Citizens to Their Power: A Climate Advocacy Case Study (Gary Rucinski\, activist)
DESCRIPTION:Former Vice President Al Gore once remarked that “all we lack is the political will” to act on climate. In 2007 a retired real estate agent from southern California decided to do something about this. He founded Citizens’ Climate Lobby with a mission of building the political will for a livable world by awakening individuals to their power as citizens. \nIn this interactive session\, participants will be introduced to the concept of transformational advocacy with examples drawn from the speaker’s 15-year history with CCL. Key to this experience has been the speaker’s own awakening to his power as a citizen and the equally rewarding experience of helping others do the same. Leave this session with an understanding of how to use transformational advocacy to advance solutions to issues you care about. \nGary Rucinski is a physicist\, the Northeast Regional Coordinator for Citizens Climate Lobby\, and the founder of Committee for a Green Economy\, who has also run for a Massachusetts’ congressional seat and more local positions over recent years. \n

SUMMARY:The Viscera of Our Times (Felice Belle\, poet) (Poetry Reading)
DESCRIPTION:Felice Belle will read from her debut poetry collection Viscera (Etruscan Press\, 2023). Her poems explore—among many things—pandemic isolation\, heartbreak and loss\, cultural collisions\, dreams\, and desire. As author Colum McCann writes in the book’s afterword\, “These poems get to the heart of the matter…the true viscera\, the blood and guts of who we are.” \nAs a poet and playwright\, Felice Belle has performed at the Apollo Theater\, Joe’s Pub\, TEDWomen\, and TEDCity2.0. Her writing has been published in several journals and anthologies including Oral Tradition\, The Common\, and UnCommon Bonds: Women Reflect on Race and Friendship. Playwriting credits include It Is Reasonable to Expect\, We Hold These Truths\, and Game On!. She is a lecturer in the low-residency MFA program at St. Francis College and Artists Network Director for the global nonprofit Narrative 4. \n
