SUMMARY:Youth Book Club: Bringing the Beach Home (Laura Atkins)
DESCRIPTION: \nJoin us for a book club built around Laura Atkins’ latest children’s book\, Bringing the Beach Home. Rowan and Rowan’s father spend a day at the beach. Rowan is already unhappy about going back and forth between Dad’s and Mom’s houses and doesn’t look forward to the adventure. But when Rowan slows down and connects to nature’s rhythms\, Rowan comes to connect to and love the beach. When they finally have to leave\, and with Dad’s help\, Rowan finds a creative way to “bring the beach home.” The book shows how connection to nature and creativity can help us all to feel “at home” in the world\, and interconnected. \nLed by the author\, this book reading will also include a series of creative arts and crafts activities to stimulate connection with nature. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and can also be personalized and autographed by the author! \nLaura Atkins is a lover of children’s books as well as an activist for social justice. She spent seven years in the children’s publishing industry\, working at Children’s Book Press\, Orchard Books and as a book editor Lee & Low Books. After that\, she received her MA in Children’s Literature from Roehampton University in England. I also got my MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults at VCFA in Vermont. She has published five children’s books\, including the first two books in the Fighting for Justice book series and Calling All Future Voters! \nJoin us on Tuesday\, July 8 for another youth book club focused on Calling All Future Voters! with two of the books’ authors\, Laura Atkins and Jennifer-Lai Peterson.  \n

SUMMARY:Leftover Drawing and Paper Lab (Rachael Cole)
DESCRIPTION: \nDo you have stacks of old drawings\, works on paper\, or scrap paper lying around? Want to give a second life to artwork that seemed “unsuccessful” the first time? put all those junk envelopes and colored scraps of paper to use. Maybe your kids have old drawings they are ready to let go of. Those can all become beautiful new objects. \nWe will choose items to create from our discards\, like cut shapes\, collages\, envelopes\, note cards\, beads\, jewelry\, boxes\, and repurposed plastic containers. \nThis is a hands-on experimentation and collaboration for our community. \nThere will be a variety of tools on hand\, including paper bead makers\, box templates\, and clean\, used containers. If there is interest\, we can start a project that continues to build as the summer continues. \nRachael Cole is a third generation WFC community member\, a visual artist and a children’s book author and illustrator. \n
