SUMMARY:Here Where We Live Is Our Country: Book of the Summer Discussion
DESCRIPTION: \nOnce the most influential Jewish political force in eastern Europe\, the Jewish Labor Bund was secular\, socialist\, and uncompromisingly anti-Zionist. The Bundists fought for dignity and equality\, not in an imagined homeland in Palestine but “here where we live.” \nIn the first popular history of the Bund\, Crabapple re-creates their extraordinary world through dramatic portraits of insurgent poets and antireligious rebels\, clandestine revolutionaries and lovers on the barricades. The Bundists live deeply within this violent\, volatile\, and somehow hopeful period\, as their stories interweave with the Russian Revolution and the Holocaust. The Bund’s rise and fall raises the vital question: What can we learn from a movement that\, for all its toughness\, imagination\, and moral clarity\, was largely destroyed? \nHere Where We Live Is Our Country reanimates a band of idealists who broadened our global political imagination. As we once again contend with nationalism\, repression\, and the struggle for belonging\, the Bund’s remarkable story and message—that liberation\, dignity\, and solidarity must begin where we stand—reaches across time as a guide to our own urgent moment. \n

SUMMARY:From Anti-Racist Quilts to Anti-ICE Prayer Flags: Participatory Art for Collective Liberation (M. Koyama)
DESCRIPTION:Rev. Mark Koyama shares strategies deployed by faith communities to use participatory art to deepen understanding and reflective action on pressing social justice issues. Mark will reflect on his journey with the Sacred Ally Quilt Ministry project that he jointly curated and toured nationwide together with Harriet Ward and Kathy Barrett Blair from 2020 to 2023\, and continue with the Crisis Liturgy project using prayer flags to commemorate people who have died in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody in the most recent phase of deliberate state cruelty against immigrant communities and allied activists. \nThe evening presentation will be paired with a daytime group project to jointly create a prayer flag that will be hung at WFC in advance of the 250th Anniversary of the “independence” of colonial settlements on Turtle Island. \nRev. Mark Koyama grew up in South East Asia and New Zealand before coming to live in the United States in 1980. He was educated at Bates College\, Union Theological Seminary (MA 1992)\, University of Massachusetts Amherst (MFA 2010) and Yale Divinity School (MDiv 2015). Mark is the settled pastor at the United Church of Jaffrey\, in Jaffrey New Hampshire. Click here to watch “Claustrophobia\,” Mark’s July 2020 sermon about the origins of the quilt project. \n

SUMMARY:250 Years of Resistance: Movement Songs with Ty Citerman
DESCRIPTION:Ty Citerman is a Brooklyn\, NY-based musician and regular at World Fellowship who will lead us in a night of songs of resistance. He has been a performing artist and song leader in various settings for more than 30 years. And on this 4th of July\, marking 250 years since the Declaration of Independence\, it goes without saying that the United States faces a critical moment in our nation’s history. And here at WFC\, we choose to embrace our tradition as a nation of immigrants; as a nation built by working people; as a nation built (often under duress) by black and brown people; and as a nation that has not fully reckoned with many of its foundational contradictions. And as we organize alongside our immigrant neighbors – and organize for justice in so many spheres – the ancient tradition of movement singing remains forever important. Songs helped inspire those who held the line in sub-zero temperatures against the violence of ICE agents in Minneapolis this past winter – and in so many other settings past\, present and future. So we will joyfully and loudly sing songs together on July 4 that express outrage\, hope\, pain and solidarity  as we shore up for the fights ahead. Movement music is needed now more than ever. \n

SUMMARY:Crisis in Public Education (M. Hester)
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\n\nAt the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding\, elite and authoritarian forces are moving to shape the country in their vision. This is playing out in the courts\, in the legislatures\, on the streets\, and in our public schools. Public schools are now a key battleground in the effort to whitewash the country’s history through censorships and dismantle hard-fought public goods through exclusion and privatization.  In this session\, Megan Hester\, National Campaign Director at the NYU Metro Center and the Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools\, will share how we got the public school system we have today\, who are the forces trying to destroy it and why\, and what communities are doing to fight back. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n

SUMMARY:Social Justice Cinema: "5 Broken Cameras"
DESCRIPTION:\nOn the eve of the visit and presentation of prominent Palestinian rights activist\, Iyad Burnat\, we screen the acclaimed 2011 documentary made by his brother\, “5 Broken Cameras.” Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature\, the film gives viewers a riveting\, ground-level perspective on the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the nonviolent resistance movement against the settlements that began in 2005 in the West Bank village of Bil’in. Emad Burnat\, an olive farmer who quickly caught to the power of the camera as a documenter\, witness and protector\, captured seven years in the life of his village\, filming demonstrations\, arrests and killings\, while preserving the personal memories of his son Gabreel growing up amid the conflict and his wife Soriah holding the household together while imploring Burnat to stop filming. The five cameras he deploys\, all broken while filming confrontations with Israeli soldiers\, capture Burnat’s transformation to journalist and documentary filmmaker. Israeli activist and filmmaker Guy Davidi\, the co-director\, co-editor\, writer and co-producer of 5 Broken Cameras\, had spent a long period of time in Bil’in prior to meeting Burnat\, both making films and getting to know the residents there. He worked with Burnat to find and shape the story\, turning it into a personal tale of struggle and empowerment. \nEach Sunday night\, join us for volleyball and games on the lawn until sundown. At sundown\, settle down on blankets or outdoor chairs for a summer evening of social justice-themed film screenings you won’t easily find elsewhere. Topical documentaries and resistance narratives centered. Open to WFC guests and the surrounding community. \n\n

DESCRIPTION:Making Dorodango: finding a perfection through play\, process and practice (with Missy McCormick)\n\n“[A]n artifact of such utter simplicity and perfection that it seems it must be either the first object or the last…”— William Gibson\n\nHikaru Dorodango\, or mud dumpling\, are made of a ball of mud and plant fiber\, shaped in the hand and refined into a perfect lustrous sphere through drying and polishing by hand.  The experience of making Dorodango spans from messy and fun at the beginning\, creative and experimental in the middle while adding colored clays and drying between working time\, and very meditative\, centering\, and grounding at the end while refining it into a perfect sphere.\n\nThis is a fire free clay workshop\, and will combine various refined dried clays with clay\, dried plant fibers\, and water foraged from WFC’s property. The workshop will span 5 days and include some work outside on picnic tables and some on the Lodge porch. Participants will meet each morning 10am-12pm\, and optionally 4pm-6pm to continue work.\n\n“The process is simple\, but the result makes it seem like alchemy.”\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Nature Photography Workshop (G. Bilander)
DESCRIPTION:\nGina Bilander presents a 5-day (M-F) nature photography workshop. All ages and levels of skill and equipment are welcome as we learn to translate what we see and respond to into photographs: that art and science of light. Morning sessions are from 10am to 12. Daily handouts are given on technique\, the history of photography and nature essays; and there a nearby field trips. One class discusses whether\, in this age of 24 hour multimedia saturation\, a photograph can still bear witness to the important issues of this time. \n \n\n

SUMMARY:H. Cartier-Bresson: Street Photographer (G. Bilander)
DESCRIPTION:The life and work of Henri Cartier-Bresson\, the legendary and influential photographer\, spanned the most important historical events of the 20th century that continue to impact our understanding of the world today. His belief in capturing the “decisive moment” went beyond his artistic expansions of documentary photography to be present and photograph Africa in the 1920’s\, the tragic fate of the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War\, the liberation of Paris during WW2\, Gandhi during the last hours of his life and changing events in China. His lived experiences of working with film director Jean Renoir\, being interned in prison camps during the war to being one of the founders of the photo agency Magnum\, and portrait photographer of writers and artists such as Faulkner\, Camus and many others gave his work depth and meaning that endures. \nPresented by Gina Bilander\, photographer \n \n  \n

The Biden administration allocated billions for energy efficiency\, but low- and middle-income families face barriers in accessing the benefits from those investments. Max Toth of Clean Energy Works will discuss a different path that can open the door for decarbonization to all. \n

SUMMARY:Standing with Women Garment Workers (J. Champagne)
DESCRIPTION:Workers in Asia\, Central America\, and Africa who produce the clothes we wear are coming together with allies to win legally binding agreements with global brands. As brands and retailers press suppliers for lower prices and quicker turnaround\, workers are successfully demanding and enforcing commitments to address life-threatening safety issues\, end gendered violence and harassment\, and respect workers’ right to organize unions. Jessica Champagne will share her experience at the Worker Rights Consortium supporting workers in winning\, negotiating\, and implementing these agreements in Indonesia and other countries — as well as the enormous impact campus organizers have made in the industry by demanding sweat-free swag at their universities. \n

SUMMARY:People-Driven Campaign Finance (R. Ennen)
DESCRIPTION:What are the alternatives to billionaires owning and controlling our political system\, as has increasingly become the norm in the US since Citizens United? Learn from Rebecca Ennen of Movement Voter Project (MVP)\, which operates like a “mutual fund” for political giving.. Progressives don’t have to choose between grassroots organizing and electoral power-building. We can do both — and in the age of MAGA\, we must. Rebecca will talk about the shifting electoral map\, the new and old tactics we need\, and where progressives should be focusing our time and resources. \n
