DESCRIPTION: \nThis presentation looks at the work of public defenders and their juvenile clients in conflict with the law\, and particularly the problematic practice of charging minors as adults. It digs into the experience of the first years of resentencing work in Maryland following the Juvenile Restoration Act that came into effect in October 2021 predicated on manifold research regarding the psychosocial development that does not usually occur until the later teen years. Presenter Ian Augarten has been working with the Maryland Office of the Public Defender for well over a decade and serves as the Supervising Attorney – Juvenile for Prince George’s County. \n
