Generational Cycles in Activism (Judy Clark)
19 August , 2024 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Judy Clark was a red diaper baby who jumped into activism in her early teens, supporting the struggle for quality education and community control in NYC, led by the Black community in Brooklyn. By 1970, she joined Weatherman SDS, and for over a decade immersed herself in small, self-enclosed. anti-imperialist cadre organizations that championed armed struggle, even after becoming a mother. Ultimately, she spent 38 years in prison for her part in the 1981 BLA Brinks robbery, in which three people were killed. While reckoning with the damage she caused, she worked with others inside to create community-based programs to address the problems they faced and their desires to grow. She was one of the founders of ACE (AIDS Counseling and Education) and part of the committee of women who built a college program after public funding was eliminated. Since her release in 2019, she has continued to be active in peer support and advocacy to end mass incarceration, and most recently, as part of the Jewish Voices for Peace, demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
