Making Dorodango: finding a perfection through play, process and practice (with Missy McCormick)
20 July @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
“[A]n artifact of such utter simplicity and perfection that it seems it must be either the first object or the last…”— William Gibson
Hikaru Dorodango, or mud dumpling, are made of a ball of mud and plant fiber, shaped in the hand and refined into a perfect lustrous sphere through drying and polishing by hand. The experience of making Dorodango spans from messy and fun at the beginning, creative and experimental in the middle while adding colored clays and drying between working time, and very meditative, centering, and grounding at the end while refining it into a perfect sphere.
This is a fire free clay workshop, and will combine various refined dried clays with clay, dried plant fibers, and water foraged from WFC’s property. The workshop will span 5 days and include some work outside on picnic tables and some on the Lodge porch. Participants will meet each morning 10am-12pm, and optionally 4pm-6pm to continue work.
“The process is simple, but the result makes it seem like alchemy.”
